A single round-robin for 8 teams runs 28 matches across 7 rounds. Every team plays 7 of them. With an even number of teams, nobody ever sits out.

The formula: total matches = n × (n − 1) ÷ 2. With an even number of teams the league runs n − 1 rounds; with an odd number it runs n rounds, one team on a bye each time.

Why the numbers matter

The match count tells you whether a season fits the calendar. Ten teams in a single round-robin is 45 matches. Make it home and away and that jumps to 90. If your league plays once a week, that is the difference between a 9-week season and an 18-week one. Run the count first, then decide single or double.

Byes matter too. An odd number of teams means somebody is idle every round. That is fine, the bye rotates fairly, but it is worth knowing before you promise everyone a game every week. An even count avoids it entirely.

Common questions

How many matches are in a round-robin league?

For n teams, a single round-robin has n × (n − 1) ÷ 2 matches, because every pair of teams meets once. An 8-team league plays 28 matches. A double round-robin (home and away) doubles that to 56.

How many rounds does a round-robin take?

With an even number of teams, n − 1 rounds, and every team plays in every round. With an odd number, n rounds, because one team sits out each round on a rotating bye. A double round-robin doubles the round count.

What is the total number of matches in a 17-team round-robin league?

136. That is 17 × 16 ÷ 2. Because 17 is odd, it runs over 17 rounds with one team on a bye each round, so every team plays 16 matches.

Does an odd number of teams need a bye?

Yes. A true round-robin pairs teams two at a time, so an odd count always leaves one team out each round. The bye rotates, so every team sits out the same number of times across the season.
